Should Antacids Be Taken On An Empty Stomach?

Why antacids are taken before meal?

Indigestion and heartburn can be alleviated with the use of antacids, which work by counteracting (neutralizing) the stomach acid. They are available without a prescription from pharmacies and shops as a liquid or chewable tablets.

When using an antacid, be sure to follow the directions on the package. A lot of this relies on what you're taking.

If you have symptoms of acidity or suspect you will, take an antacid as soon as possible, ideally with or shortly after a meal, and right before retiring for the night. The dosages for children may be lower than for adults, so keep this in mind.

Dosage Timings:

Antacids should be used immediately following meals because this is when you are most likely to have heartburn or indigestion. If taken with food, the medication's effects may last longer.

Because antacids can impair the effectiveness of other medications, they should not be taken within two to four hours of an antacid dose. Even if you're taking antacids and drinking wine, the combination may worsen your symptoms.

Is it safe to take antacids every day?

If you have heartburn, antacids can help relieve the symptoms, but they should only be taken as needed (but not on a daily basis). A combination of antacids and other drugs is more likely to be used to treat and prevent heartburn symptoms.

Taking an antacid can put an end to your discomfort for a few hours. There is a downside, though; long-term use is not advised. If you find yourself taking antacids frequently, see a doctor.
